ABOUT OUR PRODUCT
Gabion is a French word for heavy gauge wire baskets filled with indigenous rocks. Florida uses coquina rocks approximately the shape and size of a grapefruit. The installation is an old age concept dating back 150 years. The baskets are anchored down with rebar, toed back and cross tied to then be attached together with a stainless steel hog ring by using a pneumatic gun forming a monolithic system.
Gabions are used in many different aspects in controlling erosion in over 128 countries. Typically, gabions would be installed on shorelines, canals, retention ponds and lake beds; they are commonly used as the ultimate seawall as well. What’s different about these as opposed to a concrete seawall is they are permeable and not hard armory. The hydraulic wave action is absorbed into the voids of the rocks and they are stair stepped and toed back, meaning they will never fall over.
Gabions will build sand, stop all future erosion and not wash away because the rocks are contained in the galvanized PVC coated heavy gauge wire baskets. This is a monolithic system that will never fail. Gabions are also installed at 90° angles to the beach as jetties and or groins. As the sand migrates down the shoreline water moves through the gabions and filter cloth, trapping the sand . The sand will build a beach up with each passing tide; the level of the sand will rise therefore reclaiming your sand.
Gabions are approved by Florida's Mote Marine, Sea Turtle grant program of the Sea Turtle Conservatory and the Department of of Environmental Protection Agency. All agree, gabions are a viable option as opposed to commonly used riprap and methods of simply pumping sand on the beach year over year - which will always wash away. Every time the passes are dredged for beach enrichment the ecosystem is negatively disturbed.
Together, we can ensure a better future for our beaches, homes, and ecosystems that support marine life by committing to this erosion control method! Feel free to give us a call or send us an email, we would be happy to consult with you on all your gabion needs today.
